Proteus Group has completed the office renovation work on approximately 10,300 sf for San Francisco-based Uber Technologies’ Midwest headquarters at 370 North Carpenter Street.

The property owner, Chicago-based developer Sterling Bay Companies, awarded Proteus Group the project of designing the office space after gutting the interior, which was a former Kingdom Farms Inc. meatpacking facility.  The new office space has brought Uber to Chicago’s meatpacking district, which is located four blocks from Chicago’s new $40 million El stop at Morgan and Lake streets.

The space provides an expanded open office space with a series of perimeter phone and conference rooms, a laptop lounge, an indoor bike rack wall, a large break room, and an outdoor patio space.  Challenges included that the building was originally a cold storage meat distribution facility and was heavily equipped with cooling equipment, ammonia piping, insulated walls and ceilings, indoor bollards and curbs to protect against moving forklifts, etc.

In addition, the building had a mezzanine covering roughly a third of the footprint, which was largely demolished. Existing sectional loading dock doors and levelers were removed and replaced with aluminum frame storefront glass windows.  The West and South walls received seven new openings to accommodate large windows, which provide day lighting and avoids the view of the Metra line that runs just south of the building.
